The Midnight Star

Maybe a tad closer to 2.5 stars, but since I don't do 1/2 stars, we'll go with 2 stars. I loved the first book in this trilogy so much and had such high hopes for the remaining books. The second was still great but the third fell flat for me.

First, it felt really short. Which isn't always bad, but in this case, I felt like the author was in a hurry to get through it. It also felt predictable, which, again, isn't always a bad thing. A lot of times you get the sense of where things are headed in a book, but you still get the author's beautiful storytelling to bring you into the world. I didn't get that with this book. I will say that the ending brought tears to my eyes--but nothing like the raw emotion I felt while reading books one and two.

I also disliked the lack of character development and the (very) few additional details we were given into the lives of those on this journey. This is part of my annoyance with how short the book felt--sometimes short is better, here it just felt like there were a lot of stories left untold.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and Marie Lu's attempt at an antihero. But it really was a typical story of a main character who is hurt in her past, acts out in anger, has remorse, and is redeemed.
